Police accessing internet/phone data - Necessary or infringement?

Police accessing internet/phone data - Necessary or infringement?

The Australian Federal Police is obtaining Australian's phone and internet records without warrants nearly 1000 times a week. In a recent Senate estimate the police are also attempting to access Facebook and Google data, similarly to the US National Security Agency. There is vast debate on whether or not such access is required in order to control criminal activity or whether or not it is an infringement of privacy.
It is proposed that the Australian Federal Police should have increased access to internet and phone data records.
