PARTY ANIMALS?

PARTY ANIMALS?

A party pill is a term used to describe a range of legal recreational drugs, also known as 'herbal-highs' or 'dance pills'.

A new law in New Zealand requires that all distributors and producers of party pills must be able to prove their products are safe and until such requirements are met, many party pills have been taken off the market. Producers must now provide scientific data similar to that which is required for new medicines.

The Associate Health Minister claims that "human safety is the paramount consideration". To ensure safety, animals will be used to test these pills.

There are varied opinions on this issue. On the one hand there is a view that it is inappropriate to harm animals just in order to test drugs taken for pleasure as opposed to testing necessary medicines. Others claim the use of animals is necessary, as although they suffer, it is unacceptable to release untested products onto the market that could be potentially hazardous or fatal to humans. Yet another viewpoint is that there is insufficient justification for using animals for any sort of testing.
